Our last post was all about where you can buy second hand furniture. There are some great places around Cornwall, take a look at our last post to see where. We've since bought a pair of Galaxy swivel chairs from an online site in the past week which are super comfy but need a huge amount of work.
The Galaxy chair was designed by Alf Svensson and Yngvar Sandstrom and manufactured by Dux, Sweden in the 1960s. The ones I have are circa 69 and have ivory plastic moulded shells and green and beige velvet upholstery and they have been left alone, all sad and unhappy in a garage for quite a few years.
Our first challenge this week has been to remove the drum nuts that hold the upholstery to both chairs. These were rusted together so have required a lot of brute force to get them open...and we're still working on them. The shells both needed a good clean to remove all the dirt and years of grime on them and the bases need removing for re-spraying. Have a look at the photos, they will eventually be for sale once completed.
If you've ever considered buying from a selling site, go and have a good look at the furniture before you fully commit to buying it. You could be left with something that costs a lot more to make right than you will have wanted to pay in the first place. You can always say no...
