The manufacture of Cane Furniture can be dated back to the far reaches of the Egyptians, probably even further back than that. With records of it being used all across the world spanning from the far east making its way through Western Europe all the way to Britain in the 1600’s. It’s still a well practised craft today however recently being moved from the endangered to viable craft list with the Heritage craft association.

Traditionally you will find three types of chair caning techniques:

-close caning where you’ll find strands of cane woven tightly without gaps forming patterns around a frame, not as commonly practised as the six step method.

-standard six way where you’ll see a six step pattern weaved through holes on a frame making the most commonly seen hexagonal pattern, other patterns also exist using this method as the basic starting blocks.

-sheet cane is pre woven cane sheeting usually mass produced in Asia which is used in mass production of furniture. You may have noticed over the last few years its popularity boom in the furniture mass market.
