Love your Leather

Whether you’ve been furloughed or you’re working from home, we all seem to have slightly more time on our hands at the moment and I for one have exhausted the DIY list. But have you cleaned you sofa recently…?!

Leather sofas are highly sought after these days as they’re easy to keep dust free, they’re warm in the winter, cool in the summer and can be fairly luxurious. However leather is great at clinging to all the hidden dirt we can’t really see like bodily oils, yes that’s right, the grease from your hands, hair, feet and dirt from your pet are fabulous at sinking into that lovely porous surface on that super expensive sofa you bought.

Here’s our top tips for keeping your leather sofa in tip top condition.

1) Hoover your sofa regularly, about once a week. It prevents the famous ‘Sofa snack mix’ from accumulating down the cracks and crevasses.

2) If you have a hairy pet then purchase a rubber pet hair remover brush for picking up hair that gets stuck in the seams. These are readily available on Amazon and work a treat.

3) DO NOT - whatever Mumsnet says - use any form of wet wipes to clean the leather. Wet wipes are designed to remove all dirt, oil, grease, makeup from human skin and by using them on leather over time you will see a breakdown in the surface condition of the finish and cracking will appear.

4) Use a damp cloth to remove surface dust and a small amount of simple soap for any larger areas of dirt - but test a small area first where it won’t be seen. There are a few different types of finishes to leather and some will mark easier than others SO ALWAYS TEST A SMALL AREA FIRST, get in touch if in doubt.

5) Dirtbusters offers a great small package of Leather cleaner and conditioner for when your furniture needs a deeper clean for £15 ish, it’s not suitable for all leather so check before you buy.
